In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Did you know tobacco used to be grown on the Central Experimental Farm? From the early 1900s, tobacco specialists grew American varieties of burley and cigar tobacco and compared their yields and quality using different fertilizers. Tobacco research ended in the late ‘50s after a reorganization resulted in the consolidation of the farm into a larger service.
