In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
Each year, the NCC plants around one million tulip bulbs in Ottawa, following a gift of 100,000 of them from the Dutch royal family in 1945. At Christmastime, the city is similarly brightened by Canadian Heritage, the department in charge of installing 400,000 Christmas lights throughout downtown Ottawa.
