The National Arts Centre will celebrate its re-opening by getting the royal treatment on Canada Day.

Charles, Prince of Wales, will be cutting the ribbon at the NAC’s new glass atrium on July 1. The public is invited to watch the unveiling at 2 p.m. as part of the Canada Day celebrations.

“The ‘new’ NAC is the biggest gift to Canadians to mark 2017,” said Peter Herrndorf, the centre’s president and CEO.

“We want thousands of people to come and enjoy our beautiful, new public spaces and free performances all weekend from some of Canada’s most accomplished artists,” Herrndorf said in a media release.

The new NAC atrium was a $110.5-million project — one of the biggest investments the government has made in cultural infrastructure for Canada’s 150th birthday. The new structure has improved performance spaces, full accessibility for those who have mobility challenges and public areas for events and education.

Starting at 3 p.m., there will also be family activities throughout the NAC, including musical performances by the NAC Orchestra, Jan Lisiecki, James Ehnes and more.
