In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.
In June 1832, with construction of the Rideau Canal just completed and Bytown’s population at 1,000, an outbreak of Asiatic cholera prompted the formation of Bytown’s first board of health. A temporary hospital was built along the Ottawa River at the site where the Royal Canadian Mint now stands on Sussex Drive. The location was selected to facilitate patients who arrived by boat from Montréal and would disembark at what came to be known as Cholera Wharf.
