A stretch of unseasonably hot and humid weather has meteorologists issuing a heat warning, with summer-like humidex values expected to peak at 40 degrees for the first weekend of fall.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning Friday afternoon, with “unseasonably warm temperatures” expected to hit 30 degrees Celsius while the humidity will make it feel more like 40 degrees. The late-arriving heat wave, after a cool and wet summer, is expected to persist into next week.

Most of southern and eastern Ontario will be blanketed by a band of hot weather, with heat warnings issued across the province, from Windsor to Barrie to Cornwall.

“Extreme heat affects everyone,” the weather service warned, saying heat-related risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

The City of Ottawa has extended splash pad season, with a full list of hours and locations at Ottawa.ca.

Environment Canada said it issues heat warnings when temperature or humidity conditions elevate the risk of heat illnesses like heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

The service recommended reducing risks by scheduling outdoor activities in the coolest part of the day, and taking regular brakes in a cool or shaded spot.

People and pets should never be left inside a parked vehicle.
