  2. New camera technology installed along sections of the O’Connor Street bike lanes is aimed at making the roadway safer for cyclists, Ottawa police announced Thursday.

According to police, the cameras, which are installed near the intersection of O’Connor and Waverley streets, will detect the motion of cyclists approaching the intersection, send that information to computers stored in protected casings on nearby hydro poles and activate nine LED lights which will begin flashing to alert approaching motorists.

The flashing lights are intended to give advanced warning to cars that a cyclist may be approaching the intersection.

Safer Roads Ottawa partnered with SmartCone Technologies Inc., a local start-up based in Stittsville, to implement the prototype sensor technology. The city plans to test the sensor system and judge its effectiveness.

The O’Connor bike lanes have been the subject of multiple vehicle-bike crashes. In one case in November 2016, police charged a driver after a man cycling on the bike lane was knocked to the ground in dramatic fashion. It was the third bike-car collision on O’Connor since the bike lanes opened two weeks earlier.
