“If I had a wish, I’d wish for more of this,” Gord Downie sang on 2012’s Done and Done.
Ottawans are clearly nowhere near done memorializing the iconic Tragically Hip frontman after news of his death from brain cancer broke Wednesday as emotional tributes keep coming.
On Thursday, Darren Fisher, the Liberal MP for Dartmouth-Cole Harbour, tweeted a picture of flowers, candles, and photographs placed on the weathered stone steps of Parliament Hill. Twitter users posted pictures of the flag atop the Peace Tower at half-mast in Downie’s honour.
Local radio stations were still playing nothing but the Hip – including 106.1 CHEZ, which had hosted a candlelight vigil, where people passed the guitar to play their favourite songs, and pledged Wednesday to play nothing but the band through Monday morning
Local businesses, including Compact Music in the Glebe and Malenka Originals in Hintonburg, turned over their windows to memorials.
In Manotick, a Reddit user spotted a piano emblazoned with Downie’s picture and “In Gord We Trust,” ready for an impromptu Hip tune.
Meanwhile, as Ottawa readies for the 2017 Grey Cup, an Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group staffer tweeted a video of Downie performing 13 years ago at the last CFL championship held in Ottawa.
