On the eve of Halloween, it wasn’t the trick or treat Jeff Burnett was expecting — a grave-sized sinkhole on the front lawn.
After a concerned call from his wife, the Barrhaven resident hurried home from work around mid-day Monday to find a chunk of their lawn on Broxburn Crescent had disappeared.
By late afternoon, after a deluge earlier in the day, the oval-shaped hole was at least a metre across and well over a metre deep — big enough “to swallow a kid,” a city worker commented at the scene.
Not only was it deep, but the bottom appeared to have a sideways hole, as though the sandy soil had disappeared in a funnel.
Burnett, 33, said his immediate concern was to secure the area for the safety of his wife and neighbours, then to make sure it wasn’t a hazard for trick or treaters on Tuesday.
“The first thing that came to my mind was that sinkhole downtown near Ottawa U,” he said. “I was worried.”
He immediately called 311 when he saw the depth of the hole and was dismayed to hear the city would arrive within 24 hours. Happily, a crew was soon out, followed by another, leaving eight orange pylons as a short-term protective measure.
One of the crew members said the city’s water and sewer department was called for an emergency inspection to ensure none of its pipes were leaking and creating an air pocket. He was hoping they’d arrive before the end of the day.
Burnett suspects the hole was caused by heavy runoff that travelled down two eavestrough downspouts — his and the neighbours — that spread water along small “river rocks” in the direction of the hole. Ottawa is enduring one of the wettest years on record, including at least 46 mms of rain Saturday and Sunday, before another deluge early Monday.
The hole is directly in the path that leads to his backyard. He won’t fill it immediately until he finds out what caused the problem and whether the eavestrough outflows need to be redirected.
“My main concern is the children coming by,” he said, standing outside the five-year-old house. “I just want to get it fixed as soon as possible.”
