Environment Canada is predicting snow switching to freezing rain switching back to snow for the capital this weekend.

But up the Ottawa Valley, folks should watch for what could be a “major” winter storm dumping up to 30 cm of snow.

It’s all caused by an “intense” low-pressure system that’s tracking across the lower Great Lakes.

A special weather statement covering Kanata to Orléans predicts a “mixed bag of wintery precipitation Saturday into Sunday morning.”

Friday starts out clear and -2 C but becomes increasingly cloudy with a low of -8 C. Periods of snow are forecast to start Saturday morning totalling 2 cm with a risk of freezing rain by afternoon and a high of 0 C. Overnight, expect freezing rain or rain with a low of -1 C.

“Several hours of freezing rain are possible, especially Saturday evening,” the weather agency warns.

For Sunday, expect snow, a high of 0 C and a low of -11 C.

Meanwhile, Environment Canada issued a winter storm watch for Barry’s Bay, Killaloe, Petawawa, Pembroke and Cobden.

While the track of the system isn’t certain, predictions Friday morning were for several centimetres of snow Friday night and Saturday morning. Precipitation is expected to become light during the day Saturday but may turn to snow “at times heavy and blowing” by Saturday night. Some areas could get 15 to 30 cm with the heaviest snow near the Quebec border. There’s also the risk of freezing rain in some areas.

“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations,” Environment Canada warns. “If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone.”

Things look up next week – Monday’s forecast for Ottawa is a mix of sun and cloud and a high of -7 C.
