Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for Ottawa and Lanark County, a winter storm warning for areas west of the city, and a special weather statement for most of Central Ontario and the far reaches of Eastern Ontario.
The weather agency said it expected light mixed precipitation to develop Saturday, becoming heavy by Saturday evening.
Areas west of Ottawa were expected to receive snow — as much as 15 to 30 centimetres.
Areas to the east should prepare for freezing rain, rain and snow.
Near Ottawa, significant freezing rain was expected Saturday evening, changing over to ice pellets, then to snow Saturday night.
To the east, the freezing rain was expected to change to rain in some areas before changing to snow on Sunday morning, then taper off to flurries around noon.
The weather agency advised motorists to avoid travel.
