Rise and shine to cancelled flights and school buses, power outages and reports of thunder, lightning, heavy rain and ice pellets.

A freezing rain warning remained in in effect and after waking to snow glazed with a thick layer of ice, Tuesday morning just kept getting more treacherous.

Roads and sidewalks were slick or, at best slushy.

More than 5,400 people in the Renfrew area were without power, Hydro One reported.

Service was expected to be restored by mid-morning.

Ottawa as one huge skating rink – before lighting, thunder and hail (which my dog and I got caught in). I don't think I ever ran home so fast

School buses across the region were cancelled, including to Ottawa public and Catholic school with the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority reporting that residential and rural streets are simply too icy.

Schools are open but it’s up to parents to drop off and pick up students.

Pouring freezing rain and lightning (!) makes for a rough drive today. Seriously, just stay home if you can. #ottweather #otttraffic #ONStorm

The Ottawa airport reported at about 7 a.m. that there were already many delays and cancellations due to the weather and warned flyers to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport, and giving themselves extra time to get there.

OC Transpo was reporting a string of cancelled trips plus a major detour with routes 7,12,14,17 and 18 skirting Rideau Street which was closed at Waller Street due to a disabled vehicle.

Environment Canada’s forecast is for freezing rain to end Tuesday morning but then there’s a 60 per cent chance of more freezing rain or drizzle by late morning and afternoon. The high is a 1 C.

A few rainshowers switch to flurries totalling two cm Tuesday night with a low of -12 C.

Friday’s forecast is for a mix of sun and cloud, a high of -5 C and a low of -9 C.

Then the weather warms up for the weekend with 1 C Saturday and 3 C, with a 60 per cent of flurries then showers, Sunday.
