Do you have a suggestion on how to improve Bluesfest?
Organizers of Ottawa’s biggest and most diverse summer music festival are holding a public meeting on Jan. 30 to discuss issues related to the 10-day event, which is scheduled for July 5-15.
Bluesfest’s executive director Mark Monahan said the meeting was prompted by a greater-than-usual amount of feedback in the two months following the festival, with comments ranging from security concerns to programming ideas to pedestrian traffic in the neighbourhoods near the LeBreton Flats site.
“The challenge with a festival that’s almost 25 years old is you try to keep it relevant,” Monahan said. “We’re looking forward to the future but trying to better understand our audience.”
The festival has attracted an increasingly youthful audience in recent years, a demographic lured by headliners from the EDM, hiphop and pop genres, including artists such as Skrillex, Migos, 50 Cent and P!nk.
“It’s one of the most diverse festivals that I’ve been to in terms of audience demographics, and that’s challenging,” said Monahan. “The notion of younger people, maybe (needing) more security, underage drinking, these aren’t new issues, but we’re always looking for better ways to deal with them. We want to make sure everyone enjoys the music and has a good time, and feels safe.”
The meeting takes place from 7-9 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Tom Brown Arena, 141 Bayview Rd. Admission is free but capacity is limited; you must register in advance by Jan. 28. Email your full name to rsvp@ottawabluesfest.ca to be added to the guest list.
As for this year’s lineup, the Dave Matthews Band will make its Bluesfest debut on July 11. The rest of the program will be unveiled in February.
