Ottawa police are investigating after a statue of Buddha that was brought all the way from Sri Lanka was vandalized outside a Heron Road temple.

Police responded to the Hilda Jayewardenaramaya Buddhist Monastery and meditation centre at 1481 Heron Rd. on Friday morning after members of the community discovered the damage in the front garden of the temple — the statue’s head had been cut off.

Police believe the damage to the single statue occurred some time between 9:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. East division detectives are investigating the vandalism but police say that there is currently no evidence to suggest that this is a hate crime.

Police have no suspects, but ask anyone with any information about what happened to call them at 613-236-1222. ext. 3566
