Spring sprang with a whinge as Ottawa awoke to a windchill of -18 Tuesday morning.

But warmer days are on the way.

By Tuesday afternoon, expect sunshine, a high of 0 C and a UV index – remember those? – of 3, or moderate.

The spring equinox – “equal night” – is when most of the world gets about 12 hours of day and night. Environment Canada explains that the equinox, which is at 12:15 p.m.Tuesday in Ottawa, is the moment when the sun passes directly above the equator with the result that day and night are the same lengths all over the world.

Sunrise Tuesday was at 7:05 a.m. and sunset is at 7:14 a.m.

The overnight low is expected to be -12 C.

Wednesday should be sunny with a few clouds rolling in over the morning, a high of 2 C and a low of -8 C.

For Thursday, expect a mix of sun and cloud, a high of 2 C and a low of -10 C.

Friday’s forecast is for a mix of sun and cloud, a high of 1 C and a low of -9 C.

The weekend is expected to usher in a warmer spell with mixed skies and highs of 3 C Saturday and 4 C Sunday and 5 C Monday.

Typical temperatures for the first day of spring are a high of 4 C and low of -5 C.
