An Ottawa paramedic dispatcher helped coach a woman over the phone as she was giving birth on Sunday afternoon.

A call came in from the city’s south end at 12:20 p.m., said Supt. Matthew Galarneau on Monday.

Garlarneau said Ashley, the dispatcher whose last name was not released, was able to calmly relay instructions to a family member, who then passed along the directions to the woman giving birth.

A healthy baby girl was delivered about 10 minutes after the call came in.

Galarneau said dispatchers have scripts specifically for such an occasion, but the key to a safe, successful delivery is staying calm, using “common sense” and providing a lot of reassurance.

“From how it sounded, it was a positive experience for everybody,” said Galarneau.

Paramedics arrived about an hour later at 1:11 p.m. to take the mother and her new baby to the hospital.
