Albert and Slater streets could change in the coming years, following the Transportation Committee’s approval today of the functional designs for their reconstruction.
As part of the planned replacement of aging sewers and watermains, the City would also simplify the road network and improve accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
Slater Street would be closed between Empress Street and Bronson Avenue, as would Commissioner Street between Albert and Slater streets. Albert Street would accommodate two-way traffic for 165 metres east of Empress Street, and a new eastbound one-way street would connect Albert Street to the intersection of Bronson Avenue and Slater Street.
Construction of the $26-million project, from Empress Street to Bay Street, would begin no earlier than 2021 and take three years. Timing would be coordinated with the Ottawa Central Library project and the renewal of Albert and Scott streets.
Once the O-Train Confederation Line opens, the City would also make interim modifications to Albert and Slater streets, between Bay and Waller streets. The dedicated bus lanes in the area would be decommissioned, with local OC Transpo and STO buses running in the general traffic lanes.
An additional 65 on-street parking spaces would be available all day, but there would be 190 fewer spaces available on evenings and weekends. There would still be about 3,000 off-street parking spaces within one block of Albert and Slater streets.
Dedicated cycling facilities would be implemented on the right side of Albert and Slater streets, providing a consistent design from Scott Street to the Rideau Centre. Between the pedestrian crossing on the Mackenzie King Bridge and Waller Street, cyclists would use median cycling lanes.
Construction of the $6.4-million project, from Bay Street to Waller Street, would take place between 2019 and 2022.
This item will go to City Council on Wednesday, April 11.
