　　 10月6日，台湾媒体报道说，台湾“中央研究院生物医学研究所”副研究员何美乡表示，非典如果重新出现，将会在高纬度且有着足够病毒量的地区率先爆发。何表示，一位不久前造访台湾的美国哈佛大学学者预言说，北京纬度高，今年秋冬再度发生非典疫情的机会较大，此外，中国香港、台湾以及加拿大、新加坡都不能掉以轻心。

　　专家们言之凿凿，人们就不能掉以轻心，非典的警报就不能解除。然而，令人百思不得其解的是，世界上纬度高的城市远不止北京一个，而新加坡纬度并不高，为何独独这些地方偏受非典病毒的青睐呢？10月份刚刚由中国社会科学出版社出版的《最后一道防线―――中国人基因流失忧思录》一书也许为解开这个疑问提供了一个全新的思路。该书作者童增在此书中提出了这样一个观点：非典可能是针对中国人的一个基因武器！

　　童增为北京大学法律系硕士研究生毕业，曾长期从事研究工作。上世纪90年代初，他提出的“国际法上的战争赔偿和受害赔偿”理论，引发了中国民间对日索赔运动，可以说是中国对日民间索赔运动的奠基人之一。闻知《最后一道防线》一书出版，记者联络童增并专就此书进行了采访。

　　非典病毒只针对特定人群

　　说非典是生化武器，在非典今年3月开始肆虐我国后就有媒体有过此说。香港《大公报》今年4月13日报道说，俄罗斯医学科学院院士卡雷辛柯夫在非典疫情大规模爆发初期就断言，非典型肺炎是一种生物武器，极可能是从实验室里流出来的。他的依据是：非典是麻疹病毒与流行性腮腺炎病毒的混合体，而这种混合病毒只有在实验室里才可能培育出来，在自然环境中根本不可能发生。非典来自生化武器这一观点提出来后，美国政府还曾两次否定非典是美国的生化武器。

　　童增则对非典是生化武器一说提出了不同的观点：如果非典是生化武器，它就会不分国界、种族地进行侵害，但实际情况是，非典主要肆虐的是中国及其他国家的华人社区，因此，非典可能是比生化武器更高级的基因武器。

　　童增说，全世界有白色人种、黄色人种和黑色人种，由于遗传基因的差异，不同人种对疾病感染是有差异的。他引述中国遗传学专家杨焕明的观点说：“现在测的人类基因组是白种人基因组，白种人基因组和黄种人的基因组肯定还有差异，现在看至少差千分之六左右，可能还要更高一些。”基因武器是根据某个人种的遗传基因而制造的，它在使用过程中针对的就是这个人种。

　　而非典病毒就有这种特性。非典病毒白种人就很难被感染，即使染上了恢复也较快。日本也很少有非典病例，这是因为日本人的地缘关系与同一纬度的中国人相差很远，基因病毒可以很容易“识别”日本人和中国人。美国则没有死亡病例。加拿大截至4月25日被传染139例，死亡15例，而其中华人占13例。

This article has no basis in science. We know the closest relative of the Sars virus is Cronovirus. The disease mechanism of Sars is severe antiviral immune reaction. If a Sars patient can survive the severe respiratory distress, he or she will survive. In the older population, the ability to survive a respiratory distress is weakened. That is why the elderly are more vulnerable, particularly those with underlying disease conditions. That is also why we don't see many young patients die of Sars.

What is a Gene Weapon? What kind of weapon strategy is this by targeting the older population? Are we off to find "Gene Weapon of Mass Destruction"? How do we characterise the North American population - White, black, Asian, Indian?

I would rather believe it. How could US has zero percentage death rate for more than 70 patients. The first victim is a 72 years old Chinese American woman. She survived after showing severe symptom. If she would be in Canada, I am sure that she would be die like another old Chinese Canadian woman, Mrs. Guan.

What LoveBaby says is that the US has a Sars treatment the rest of the world does not have. That is simply a suspicion without the support of any evidence.

Mind you, the US approach to Sars IS different from the rest of the world, and they say it clearly. They do not support the use of Ribavirin, as the FDA has found no evidence of efficacy of this drug in cell culture. That does no mean Ribavirin is not effective in patients, but that is what we know.

The US FDA and CDC are working very hard to develope a vaccine for Sars, and they will probably be the first to have one. By then, we will have no worry for Sars any more -- everywhere.

There is simply not a shred of evidence to indicate that the US has anything to do with Sars. As to how to make a virulent disease, has anyone seen a Level III disease lab? Does the "Gene Weapon" theorist know the Ebola virus?

I admit that it is only my suspicion. However, as outlined by the book, lots of suspicious phenomenon can not have satisfied explanation.

Talking about treatment, why was American was able to get the right approach for its first patient when it had insufficient first hand experience for this brand new virus, not saying that common approach did not work. For instance, if you had a fever, the doctor would first prescribe an aspirin for you. Until the aspirin does not work, then the doctor knows that it maybe something else. However, the American doctor knew in advance that anti-bacteria did not work for its first patient at all. They were also hard to explain to other countries what was the exact right approach. We only know that nobody died in American hospital.

If it is gene or bio-chemical weapon, then there is no such stupid country to let you know or admit it. Lots of military bases in US are forbidden for access. Who knows what kind of weapons are being invented?

Anyway, our Chinese fellows have suffered the most by the attacking of SARS. I do not want any innocent Chinese to lose his/her life anymore, especially those medical workers who risk their lives to save others. This is only my personal view, you do not need to agree with me.
