The Planning Committee today received a report that shows signs of continued positive economic growth. Last year, the City received 1,044 development applications – an increase over the 1,002 received in 2016 and the 848 received in 2015. The figures were part of the 2017 Year-End report and 2018 Work Program of the City’s Planning, Infrastructure and Economic Development department.
The Committee also approved the next stage of redevelopment in Wateridge Village, at the former site of Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe. This phase of redevelopment would see construction of 301 townhouses and stacked townhouses on three parcels of land.
City Council approved overall zoning for Wateridge Village in late 2015. Before work can proceed, however, a further zoning amendment is needed to change several performance standards, including yard setbacks and the minimum number of visitor parking spaces required.
The Committee also approved plans for a large mural on the 15-storey apartment building at 215 Wurtemburg Street, at the corner of Rideau Street. The approved changes permit installation of a mural up to 10 storeys high on the wall facing Rideau Street, as well as on a lower portion of the wall facing Wurtemburg Street. The design would be developed through community sessions led by the artist on a theme of “by the community for the community,” to highlight contributions of newcomers to Ottawa.
City Council will consider the mural at its meeting on Wednesday, April 11, along with a zoning amendment for a subdivision in Barrhaven. All other items approved at today’s Planning Committee meeting will go to Council on Wednesday, April 25.
