The National Research Council is looking for a president, though this doesn’t automatically mean a new president.

Incumbent Iain Stewart was appointed by the cabinet in the summer of 2016 for a two-year term, which is now winding down. While the job is now being advertised, he is free to apply for re-appointment.

For anyone interested, there are some details available on the website for Governor in Council appointments. For instance:

• The salary range is $259,900 to $305,700.

• The timing is tight: A committee will start evaluating applications on May 3, less than three weeks away.

• Yes, you should be bilingual.

• A background in science or engineering is mandatory, along with extensive management experience.

• “Preference may be given to applicants who are members of one or more of the following groups: women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, and members of a visible minority group.”

Stewart came to the NRC after the sudden departure of John McDougall, a Conservative appointee who did not find favour with the new Liberal government.

The NRC has a budget of about $1.1 billion.
