A dramatic fire that spread through an unfinished high-rise condo building in Little Italy began in the exterior garbage chute and has been deemed accidental.
The building on Champagne Avenue South was under construction, and no units were occupied. Interim fire chief Kim Ayotte said Monday said an estimated 150 workers evacuated the building quickly, with only one minor injury taking place.
Financial losses from the blaze are an estimated $10 million. Ashcroft Homes, the building’s developer, is currently in talks with its insurance company.
Investigators said the cause of the fire was accidental, and that fires originating in garbage chutes are often due to “improper disposal of smoking materials,” or chutes that are clogged with debris.
In an update Friday, Ottawa Fire Services reminded smokers to dispose of their butts safely in noncombustible, wind-resistant containers, and “never in garbage chutes, dumpsters, planter pots or mulch.”
