Firefighters battled a blaze that spread from a hedge to a family home on Friday after receiving a call from an alert neighbour.

The neighbour called 911 at 3:01 p.m. after seeing a fire in a tree in the backyard of 108 Seabrooke Dr. near Gowrie Drive and Barra Avenue. The neighbour later provided updated information that a hedge on fire ignited the side of the house.

“Luckily this person was able to notify us early and also evacuate the occupants of the home so that no one sustained any injuries,” said Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Danielle Cardinal.

Additional emergency vehicles had to be dispatched to the scene after the fire began burning the exterior of the house.

The fire service is reminding motorists to pull over when they hear emergency vehicles approaching, and to slow down in areas where first responders are working.

Cardinal said the fire was “under control” by 3:19 and that a fire investigator would visit the scene to determine a possible cause.
