After weeks and months of “numerous” complaints about horses running loose in Tyendinaga Township, police said they’ve charged their owner with mischief but were still warning motorists to watch for errant equines.

The OPP concluded that the horses were wandering in the area of Blessington and Weese roads because of inadequate fencing.

Callers were also concerned about the animals’ health and welfare.

Police executed a search warrant on the property Tuesday with the help of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and township staff.

Insp. Scott Semple who heads the OPP detachment in Napanee, about 200 km southwest of Ottawa, said he’s confident that collaboration has resulted in a safe solution for the animals and the public.

Charlotte Bright, 70, faces one charge of mischief under the Criminal Code of Canada.

The horses were removed to be housed elsewhere until an enclosure that can keep them on the property is in place.
