The director of Ottawa’s largest school board is leaving, and a search has begun for her replacement.

Jennifer Adams, director of education at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, will retire by the end of December, board chair Shirley Seward announced at Tuesday night’s meeting. She called it a great loss for the board.

“Jennifer is a leader in K-12 education provincially and internationally,” said Seward in a statement. “Her leadership will be missed around the board table and throughout the district.”

Adams was not immediately available for comment. In a statement, she called the school board an “incredible organization,” with dedicated trustees and staff who do “remarkable work on behalf of our students.”

The public English-language board has 71,500 students across Ottawa-Carleton and an annual budget of $947 million.

Adams will be leaving 18 months before the end of her contract, said the board.

She arrived at the Ottawa board in 2005 after 21 years with the Lakehead District School Board in Thunder Bay.
