Today, Mayor Jim Watson and Councillor Keith Egli, Chair of the City of Ottawa’s Transportation Committee, highlighted significant infrastructure investments in Ottawa and kicked off construction season on Fisher Avenue..

Road rehabilitation work on Fisher Avenue between Baseline Road and Carling Avenue began earlier this month. Crews are preparing the road for resurfacing and making accessibility enhancements. Resurfacing is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

The City’s road resurfacing program rehabilitates and improves the driving surfaces of Ottawa’s roadways. Localized repairs to both curbs and sidewalks, along with accessibility improvements and updates, are also part of the program.

The City ended 2017 with a $24.9-million surplus. City Council voted to spend $10 million of the surplus on renewing infrastructure, including roads, sidewalks, multi-use pathways, parks and buildings across the city. The City has allocated $51.7 million to resurface roads across Ottawa this year.

Since 2015, the City’s Infrastructure Services has designed and constructed approximately $2 billion worth of infrastructure projects in Ottawa.

The City maintains nearly $42 billion in existing infrastructure, including 6,000 kilometers of roads and Highway 174. All of the City’s infrastructure assets are safe. The City is a recognized leader in asset management practices and long range planning, and maintains Ottawa’s roads based on industry standards.

Quotes

“This investment in resurfacing roads across Ottawa demonstrates Council’s commitment to protecting, maintaining and improving our critical infrastructure. Thanks to last year’s surplus, we are able to renew many more roads and other infrastructure assets than we are normally able to in a given year.”

Mayor Jim Watson

“Roads are one of the most important issues for residents across Ottawa. The City has listened to its residents, who are concerned road quality, and I am pleased that we are investing in this critical infrastructure and increasing the number of roads we can repair this year. ”

Councillor Keith Egli, Chair, Transportation Committee
