Ottawa police have made an arrest in the fatal daytime attack against Christian Science librarian Elisabeth Salm.

A man was arrested by police late Sunday afternoon. He is expected to be charged with murder.

Salm, 59, a librarian at the Christian Science Reading Room, was found bloodied, beaten unconscious and half-naked inside the office of the drop-in space at 141C Laurier Ave. W., near Elgin Street, around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Police believe Salm had also been sexually assaulted.

Salm was taken to hospital where she was kept on life support before succumbing to her injuries Friday. It was the city’s 13th homicide of the year.

Hennie Buckshi, the clerk at the First Church of Christ, Scientist on Metcalfe Street, which operates the reading room, told this newspaper that Salm, her longtime friend, was “the sweetest.”

“She’s just always so loving, just looking at everyone in a very helpful way. There couldn’t be anybody better than that.

“It’s a real shock,” Buckshi said. Salm had been a librarian at the centre since 2011.

Buckshi herself has worked as a librarian in the reading room, a job that typically sees volunteers alone in the space.

“People come in, but you know people come in from the streets, sometimes people are living on the street and they come in,” Buckshi said.

The space is meant to be for the public and no one is turned away. Anyone can walk through its doors, including those wishing to undertake Bible study or have a quiet place to read and research, or homeless people looking for a warm place in the winter.

“People are looking for information, or come in to study and rest,” Buckshi said.

Salm grew up in Ottawa, attending Merivale High School before she studied geology at Carleton University, graduating in 1982. In recent years she sang as a soprano in the Ottawa Brahms Choir and updated their website, but filled much of her time in the reading space, where Christian Scientists are ready and willing to discuss their faith. She is survived by her husband, siblings, extended family and the Christian Scientist community in Ottawa.

Police believe Salm likely got to the reading room sometime before 10 a.m. on Thursday morning — the reading room’s opening hours are listed online as being from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

She was found by a co-worker around 12:30 p.m.
