A purple putty-like substance seized from a Vanier home early this month has been confirmed as a powerful opioid mixture, known as purple heroin.

On Monday, the Ottawa police drug unit received the results of the analysis by Health Canada confirming that the substance seized on May 9 contained heroin and fentanyl, as well as other non-controlled substances.

City officials say the substance — known by its street name “purple pebbles” — is becoming more prevalent in the city’s drug supply. And, depending on the mix, which can also include morphine and carfentanil, it can be 100 times more powerful than plain fentanyl.

Ottawa police, Ottawa Public Health and the local Overdose Prevention and Response Task Force encourage people who use drugs to know the risks associated with illicit drugs and to seek assistance from the many health and support resources available in Ottawa. An overdose is considered a medical emergency and 911 should always be called for all suspected overdoses.
