Ottawa police issued 26 tickets in 90 minutes in a traffic blitz during Tuesday morning’s rush hour on Leitrim Road.

According to police, they caught one unlicensed driver and 12 vehicles with expired plate stickers. They also caught four vehicles with heavily tinted plate covers. While they were scanning the vehicles passing by, police officers also noticed five drivers using their cellular phones, leading to distracted driving tickets being issued.

Police said they also laid four additional “miscellaneous” charges.

Police were using their new automated licence plate recognition scanner along the busy roadway. The camera can identify licence plates and flag vehicles that have expired plate stickers or other outstanding issues.

Officers also noted a surge in tickets issued when they gather under a tree for brief respite from the sun.

Still doing ALPR on a very busy morning commute road. To get out of the direct sun. Some of the guys are standing under the tree/bush here. Picked off 4 cell phones so far because they did not see us and thought we were further ahead with the others they could see. $490
