The OPP is hunting for the vandals who toppled tombstones, smashing some of them, and threw pieces into a marsh at Picton’s historic Glenwood Cemetery.
Between 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, “numerous” gravestones and monuments around sections “H” and “F” of the cemetery were damaged. The extent of the damage wasn’t yet known but is estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.
Witnesses pegged the number of gravesites damaged at more than 75.
Several posted pictures to Facebook showing an overturned urn torn from a monument and upended on the roadway, and obelisks and tombstones on the ground in the park-like cemetery which was incorporated in 1873 but has burial sites dating from far earlier in the century.
“Disgusting,” Greg Bryant said on social media. “My heart is hurting for those families affected by such senseless destruction.”
Prince Edward OPP ask that anyone with information call the force’s communications centre at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477.
The Glenwood Cemetery is just a few blocks from Main Street in Picton, about 200 km southwest of Ottawa.
“One of the most beautiful and historic cemeteries in Ontario with its 62 acres of rolling hills, majestic mature forests, and winding roads,” according to the County of Prince Edward Archives, “Glenwood is typical of the Victorian age and remains largely unchanged since its 19th-century origins.”
