An Ottawa artist is auctioning off his sketch of the killdeer who famously slowed the Bluesfest beat to raise money for Safe Wings Ottawa.
Andrew King dashed off the sketch Wednesday, captioning it “good luck ‘lil gal” and noting “the city is rooting for you!”
But interest from fans soon had him hatch a plan to benefit the program of the Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ Club aimed at saving birds from dangers including window collisions through research, prevention and rescue.
It’s just another feather in the cap of the mama killdeer who with her four eggs has already been featured by CNN, the Washington Post and The Guardian.
Bluesfest crews first noticed the ground-nesting bird last Friday as workers began to set up for the festival, which starts July 5 on the grounds Canadian War Museum.
An expert moved the nest about 25 m to safety Tuesday, but not before the bird had her own (parody) Twitter account giving breathless updates.
