The Société de transport de l’Outaoauis service has released a jaw-dropping video of a young cyclist’s narrow escape from being flattened by a bus to underscore the need for caution around the city’s Rapibus corridor.
In it, a cyclist crosses against the light and zips past the rear bumper of one STO bus, only to be nearly mowed down by one he didn’t see coming in the opposite direction.
“This cyclist avoided the worst!” the company said in kicking off its awareness campaign with Gatineau police.
Among the reminders are that the corridor is only for buses — police cars are the only exceptions — and that pedestrians and cyclists should keep off and stick to sidewalks and bike paths.
Pedestrians should use the marked crossings and wait for the walk signal.
At the Cité station, they should use the pedestrian bridge to cross safely out of the path of buses.
