It’s possible a cybersecurity attack has affected thousands of current and former students and employees at Algonquin College, the school announced Friday.

It’s currently conducting a “comprehensive forensic review” to determine the scope of the security breach and the type of information the attack may have compromised, according to a news release.

“Algonquin College discovered the unauthorized and illegal access by hackers several weeks ago and the college acted immediately to reestablish the security of the server.”

The college will share the number of people whose information has possibly been affected as soon as it can be confirmed, the release said, but suggested it could be in the thousands.

Ontario’s information and privacy commissioner has been informed of the security breach.

Algonquin will reach out to those who have been impacted, and has set up a web page to provide more information.

“Our first concern is for those affected,” Algonquin College president Cheryl Jensen said in the release. “I want to let them know that we will be offering them support as we continue to investigate.”

In December 2014, one of Algonquin’s computer servers was hacked, and more than 1,200 former students may have had their personal information such as social insurance numbers, addresses and academic history compromised, the school confirmed the following June.

The college covered the costs of credit bureau monitoring and identity theft protection for affected students.
