The Royal Canadian Mint rescheduled its Canada Day activities after the undoubtedly hard-working air conditioning system of the building at 320 Sussex Dr. broke down early Sunday, before tourists entered the building.

The cooling system was fixed later, and the public has been invited back for free guided tours and activities on Monday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

It appeared the forecast of extreme heat may have also affected the number of people who turned up at the Mint on Sunday. Spokeswoman Alison Crawford said the Mint normally had about 3,000 visitors on July 1, with people queuing before doors opened, but this year only a handful of individuals were waiting to be let in at 9 a.m.

Monday isn’t looking any cooler, however, with Environment Canada calling for a 35 C high.

Temperatures peaked Sunday at 34.7 C.
