Police say they poured out over 50 drinks and snuffed out 17 joints in the ByWard Market on Friday and Saturday night as part of their enhanced community safety initiative.

Only one man was arrested for public intoxication, say police. They also said that they had doled out more than two dozen notices and warnings — including to 17 people who may have forgotten that cannabis is not yet legal and who were given warnings by the police for smoking it in public.

Ottawa police have ramped up the presence of foot patrol and bike officers this month as part of the initiative, and have focused those efforts on high-traffic areas like the Market, where increased summer traffic comes with an increased level of disorderly conduct.

The program was announced just ahead of the Victoria Day long weekend, and is slated to continue throughout the summer.

“The foot patrol-based enforcement initiative is aimed at disruptive and illegal behaviours in key areas of the City and are being carried out regularly during the summer months,” said Supt. Mark Ford in a press release.

In addition to clamping down on liquor and drug violations, police also say that they responded to “complaints of fights and thefts and responded to a medical call involving an overdose.”
