I am a BComm student in University College Dublin, Ireland. I joined an exchange program this year, and I will go to University of Ottawa to spend a 4-month period for the next semester (it's winter semester in Canada).

Do you guys have any useful tips for me? For example, what kind of clothing should I wear? And what about transportation and shopping? As i will only live there in a short period, is it necessary for me to get a driving licence?

Besides, I'd like to go and visit America, is it necessary to get a Visa to visit the US? or is it possible?

Thanks a million!

About the clothing, the weather here in Ottawa is kindly like in HaErBin, I guess. You could bring eider jacket. The indoor temperature is OK, according to the city by-law it has to be keep above 20 degree C.

Transpotation depends on where you live. There are on campus residence as well as off campus. For just one session, I think you'd better live on campus or very close to the campus. The parking on campus is expensive. It is a little too cold to wait at the bus station... Other than that, the bus system is OK. Ottawa is a small city comparing to Montreal or Toronto. There are a few malls in town. Shopping should not be a problem...

About driver's license, I am not sure. Again, depends on your situation. Will you buy a car? You'd better check the MTO website according to your situation. Maybe you can drive using your license for a period of time. Here is the link http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/index.html

About US visa, you could try, but not easy to get one. They might ask you to get one from the US embassy at your home country which I assume is China because you are not a residence in Canada. I am not quite familiar with that.

Hope I answered some of your questions. Sorry for my poor english..... :blowzy:

Ottawa is a tipical capital city in north america. not very big, not very busy. since u r only gonna stay here for a short period, i dunt think it is necessay for u to get a driver licence, unless u r really into driving or really hate walking. there r many apartments around the campus so i dunt think walking to school would become a big problem.
i dunt really know ur position so it's hard to say whether or not it is easy to get the USA visa. but still, like wat Martin said, it's worth to give a try.
anyway, hope u will have a great time in ottawa and our school.

Thank you guys very much for those useful suggestions!

One thing I forgot to tell is that I will live on Campus. Wish I'd have a great time there. Still 2 months to go. I'll be ready, Ottawa.

Besides, it's really good to have exchange program in my uni. There are in total 50 students will go abroad in my faculty. Canada is not the only destination we can choose, there are countries including Australia, France, Netherland, Singapore, Demark, UK etc. About some 80 people applied and odds are favorable if you did well in last summer exams.

Yeah, things are similar here in OU. People who get average B+ or above are qualified to be candidates of int'l exchange programs. I think you will contact with the International Student Office of OU through your school's staff. And there will be a "buddy" shows you around and be your advisor during the introduction week when you get Ottawa. So don't worry too much about that. Everything will be fine since you will get more and more info from your school. Good luck.
