A truck driver suffered serious burns and thousands of people were without power Thursday morning after a large truck flipped and set off a large fire.
The truck flipped, landed in the ditch, damaging hydro poles, then caught on fire, police said.
Moodie Drive was closed between Fallowfield Road and McKenna Drive as fire crews battled the blaze.
The driver, a man in his 50s, suffered severe burns to his head and hand. He was taken to hospital in serious, but stable, condition, paramedics said.
The fire department said that the truck struck a gas meter, “which sparked and caused a fire.”
Enbridge Gas was able to shut the gas off at the site at around 9 a.m. and the fire gradually extinguished.
Firefighters had evacuated workers from some nearby businesses as a precaution.
As a precautionary measure, power was cut for 9,000 customers in Barrhaven, Rideau-Goulbourn, Gloucester-South and Nepean. About 1,200 people were out in another swathe of Barrhaven and Rideau-Goulbourn and about 360 in the dark in a third outage covering Barrhaven, College,Rideau-Goulbourn and Kanata South.
Firefighters were using chemical foam to cool the hydro poles and power lines as a precaution.
Power was largely restored by about 9:30 a.m. Power was expected to be returned to 24 remaining customers by about 2 p.m., Hydro Ottawa said.
The was fire called in at 7 a.m. is behind a gas station and near a large storage building that could be vulnerable to fire.
Police said road closures would likely remain in effect for some time for cleanup and investigation operations.
“Please avoid the area and take an alternate route,” police said.
