Mayor Mark Sutcliffe will present the Key to the City to professional tennis player Gabriela Dabrowski this evening at Ottawa City Hall, recognizing her outstanding athletic achievements and her remarkable contributions to sport in Ottawa, across Canada, and on the international stage.
Gaby Dabrowski was born in the Ottawa Blossom Park neighbourhood on April 1, 1992. She first picked up a tennis racquet at the age of seven and quickly demonstrated she was a natural for the game of tennis. Training at the Ottawa Athletic Club under coach Tony Milo, Gaby rose quickly through the ranks, from local tournaments to provincial, national, and then to the international stage, winning the Women’s Under-18 Junior World Orange Bowl Champtionship.
Playing professionally, Gaby has competed against world’s best – from the courts at Wimbledon to the U.S. Open in New York. She won two single titles in Nashville and Toronto and captured 17 Women’s Doubles titles on Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour. She also holds three Grand Slam titles:
In 2023, she teamed up Leylah Fernandez to win the Bille Jean King Cup and won the 2024 WTA Women’s Doubles Year End Championships with Erin Routliffe. Gaby also donned the maple leaf to compete for Canada in three Olympic games: Rio Janeiro 2016, Tokyo 2020 and in 2024, bringing home the bronze medal at the Paris games.
While Gaby has achieved remarkable success on the court, she has also demonstrated strength, leadership, and resilience off the court. In 2024, she faced and overcame a breast cancer diagnosis — all while continuing to compete at the highest level.
Gaby is also a Special Olympics Global Ambassador and was the recipient of the Peachy Kellmeyer Player Service Award (for service on WTA Players Council) in 2019, 2020 and 2022. She is a proud member of the High Impact Athletes (HIA) Charity Foundation, was named one of the Top 25 Canadian Woman of Influence in 2024, and in 2025, was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal (Ontario) for her outstanding contributions.
“Gabriela Dabrowski is a three-time Grand Slam tennis champion, an ambassador for Canadian sport, and one of Ottawa's most accomplished athletes,” said Mayor Sutcliffe. “She is also an incredibly inspiring person, a cancer survivor, and a terrific role model. I'm so proud to present Gaby with the Key to the City in recognition of everything she has accomplished on and off the court. It's a thrill to welcome her back to Ottawa and present her with our city's highest honour.”
The Key to the City is Ottawa’s highest honour, awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the city through their achievements in areas such as public service, business, arts, or sport. Previous Key to the City recipients include Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Patrick Chan, Dr. Vera Etches, actress Sandra Oh, Daniel Alfredsson, Henry Burris; Alex Trebek, and was last awarded to Canadian female curling team, Team Homan.
This evening’s ceremony will take place at Ottawa City Hall where Gaby’s family, friends and supporters will gather to celebrate this well-deserved recognition.
Residents can watch the ceremony on rogerstv.com/GabrielaDabrowski or Rogers TV Cable 22.
