Recently, Congressman Brandon Gill (R-TX) introduced a piece of legislation to replace Benjamin Franklin’s name and likeness on the $100 bill, America’s most circulated bank note. Whose new and image would adorn the currency informally referred to as “Benjamins?” The 45th and 47th President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump.
A similar effort was proposed by Representative Joe Wilson, a South Carolina Republican. But instead of dealing with the politics of the $100 bill, he proposed that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing create an entirely new paper currency denomination, the $250 bill, and place Trump on the inaugural design.

These proposals reflect ongoing efforts to cement Trump’s legacy while he is alive and in office. As it stands, a federal law dating back to 1866 prohibits the use of a living person’s likeness on U.S. currency.
