Over 12,000 Canadian Border Services Agency staff plan to start picket lines at midnight tonight, potentially causing delays to air and land travel.
The customs and immigrations officials' unions are part of the Public Service Alliance with 150,000 members. Eighty thousand of those members will be legally permitted to strike at midnight.
Union officials warned travellers to expect major delays this weekend as there is "major disruption to customs services." Picket lines are set up at major airports and border crossings and workers will conduct more thorough inspections as part of work-to-rule action.
Striking workers may hold large demonstrations this weekend.
