1. All HDTV can display regular StandTV signal, just not crisp, since it's so big. HDTV is much better for DVD or HD signal. It's still quiet expensive, and usually, people buy HD can afford HD signal, or DVD.

2. Regular STV is 480i (480 horizontal lines, interlaced scanning), DVD is 480p (progressive scanning, so, twice as clear as regular TV). HD signal is mostly 1080i, some are 720p, so, much clear then DVD. DVD and HD are 16:9, and STV,VCR are 4:3.

Actually, the regular cable broadcasting is about 330 lines, VCR is 320 lines.

DVD and HD signal is really clear and crisp in HDTV. You can sit 3 feet away from a 50" HDTV and still feel sharp.

I have used Roger's HDTV since November, 2003. In August, 2004, I have noticed some problems. The 4:3 的传统格式 has caused permannent marks/stripes on the screen of my TV (16:9). The earlier HDTV 盒子 from Rogers does not have the feature to convert the 4:3 的传统格式 to cover the entire screen of a wide sreen TV. After my complain, Rogers was willing to pay $150 for compensation. At the same time Roger provided the new HDTV 盒子 (3250) which has the above feature. But I have cancelled everything.

Big players in US (ABC, ...) is starting sending HDTV programs, which means you don't necessarily need satellite or cable to get HD signal, the antenna on your roof will do. All programs will migrate to HD in year 2006, only 1 year from now.

Very disappointing, Canada is always left behind.

至于节目源的问题，

HDTV的制作成本比480i设备要高很多

我在大陆的时候看过中央台的设备，那些１０８０i的东西出来的效果真是让人流口水

可是只用来给国家领导人看京剧用????????

至于在加拿大，有些（仅仅一些）电视台在从事这样的制作，就现阶段来说，HD的摄像机和编辑机，价格都还属于天价阶段，普通电视台一般

不会考虑的，因为没那个预算。

其实吧，那个啥
HDTV就是完全basedDigital的，也有可能我的digital的概念和这位大哥的概念有冲突。

我觉得像DV, Beta, HDVC等等，都是digital的。HDTV其实就是通过高清摄像机拍摄，高清视频编辑机，编辑，然后在传输到高清录像带上，这个过程是完全数字化的。我不知道这位大哥所说的digital是什么意思

Yes,
normal the HD programs is based on the DVD and push to 720p or 1080i,like some sitcom (CSI...) and some films are also use the DVDs.
PBS HD totally use the PBS DVD. Some sports games use the true HDTV(720p),and look great. In this summer ABC use the HD to broadcast the Olympic games huhu I like it.
In movie network also has some real HDTV films not all.
The fact is Riven said there are only hours HDTV programs in whole day.
you want to see the HDTV now you should buy the HDTV tv.
Remember the HDTV tv is all widescreen , the widescreen tv is not equal HDTV tv.

2.DVD is the same quality on HDTV and normal TV
not really.
it depends on the DVD player, some DVD player can push the DVD to 720p or 1080i use the DVI or HDMI output.
if your DVD player price is lower than $200, FORGOT IT.
