Inviting a Family Member or Spouse to Visit You
You may be interested in inviting a family member or your spouse to visit you in Ottawa. Firstly, you will need to write a letter of invitation to your guest, in order to invite them to visit you in Ottawa. Your letter should be written formally, but it can also be a personal letter. It is very natural that you should wish a loved one to visit you in your new environment here.
Make sure you mention:
a) What you are doing at the University of Ottawa
b) Why you would like to invite them to join you. You can be as personal as you want here. For example, you could state that you want your family to see what your life is like here, that you miss them, etc.
c) What you will do with your guest while they are visiting you (e.g. travel, etc)
d) Where they will stay
e) The length of the stay. It is important for CIC to know that your guest will not wish to remain in Canada, and that they have something to return to in their home country. Therefore, mention the amount of time they will stay with you and the approximate date and reason they will need to return home
It is recommended that you officiate your letter with Legal Services on campus. This will give your invitation letter more validity, and may therefore help your application be accepted. Legal Services is free for all undergraduate students.
You will also need to send your guest a proof of your registration at the University of Ottawa. This can be obtained at InfoService.
Your guest will need to make the application to the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate closest to them. Direct them to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website for further information on their application.
Your guest will also be required to show:
a) A valid passport
b) Proof of sufficient funding for their time in Canada
c) Proof that they will return to their home country (e.g. a letter from an employer stating that they need to return to their place of work by a certain date)
