Fatal Accident Closes Queensway

A horrific accident involving a tractor-trailer has left one person dead, another injured and has closed both directions of the Queensway.
The accident occurred just before 2 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Queensway near Parkdale Avenue.
Police say the driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger is in serious condition in hospital.
The truck driver apparently lost control striking the cement barrier, taking out a light pole, and loosing a load of rolled steel, which spilt onto the westbound lanes and plowed through the north side sound barrier.
Both victims are believed to be from Quebec.
Eastbound traffic is being re-routed off the highway onto Carling Ave. Westbound traffic is being shuttled off at Bronson Ave.
The OPP say a section of the highway could be re-opened by 9:30 a.m.

A tractor-trailer travelling eastbound lost control striking the left cement barrier, taking out a light pole, and losing some of its load of rolled steel, which spilled onto the westbound lanes and plowed through the north side sound barrier.
The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene while the passenger is being treated at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus for injuries.
Both men are believed to be from Montreal.
No other vehicles were involved in this collision.
Traffic is now being rerouted eastbound off of Carling Ave entering back onto Highway 417 eastbound at Metcalf Ave. The westbound Highway 417 traffic is being rerouted off at Bronson and west on Carling Ave where it can re-enter Highway 417.
It is anticipated Highway 417 will remain closed at this location for at least four hours, affecting morning rush hour.
Highway 417 traffic is encouraged to find an alternative route, as traffic will be slow due to the detour.
This collision is under investigation by OPP Ottawa Detachment.

Hwy. 417 reopened after deadly truck crash
Hwy. 417 in the Parkdale Rd. area has reopened in both directions after a fatal tractor-trailer crash overnight.
Commuters who normally use the Queensway to cross the city had been forced onto alternate routes in the wake of the 2 a.m., accident, which killed the driver of the rig and left the passenger seriously injured. The spillover of traffic was still causing major delays at 11:30 a.m. on roads such as Carling Ave., Baseline Rd., and Hunt Club Rd. and the routes which access them, but traffic is expected to return to normal in the next hour or two.
The driver of the eastbound truck apparently lost control and the truck slammed into the cement barrier, took out a light pole and then dumped a load of rolled steel across the westbound lanes. The steel also went through the sound barrier abutting the highway. A crane has been brought in to remove the steel, and roadway repairs in the eastbound lanes will have to be finished before all lanes can reopen.
