Ottawa tech sector loses jobs in September

Ottawa's technology sector shed 1,600 jobs in September as the city's jobless rate rose to 7.1 per cent.
Statistics Canada says employment in the professional and IT sector fell last month to 52,100 from 53,700 in August, a decline of three per cent. The tech sector has added 8,600 jobs in the past year and 10,300 since the beginning of 2005.
Overall, the city's labour force grew by 1,800 in September and the number of people working rose 1,000. But with more people looking for work, the unemployment rate rose 0.1 per cent to 7.1 per cent.
More troubling perhaps is the long-term trend. In the past year, the city has shed 11,300 jobs and the labour force has declined by 7,500. The overall jobless rate is up 0.7 per cent in the past 12 months.
