Because I miss T&T Supermarket (大统华) in TO too much... I am thinking of forming a "T&T shopping club."

(1) We place order directly to T&T via phone or FAX. They have online flyer and some of us have past receipt from them with favourite items' names. We have them pack it for us nicely. (Confirmed this is possible)
(2) We pay a truck driver (100-200 CND) to pick up food. The car has to come with a fridge. And he/she has to be T&T and return to Ottawa the same day ON TIME. The drive will have to be a pro and reliable (insurance, police checked and others)
(3) We share the cost depends on the value of the order with a pre-set minimum spending (like $40 worth of goods)...
(4) The food will be ready for pick up at certain location in the city. TBD
(5) All order needs to be pre-paid 50% and there will be a storage fee of 1%/day, if not picked up on time.

Feedback please and let me know... who wants to sign up... or any body want to earn that $100-200 transporation fee for a 9 hr driving job?

Although it is a good idea, Is it realistic to pay less than $200? You need a truck with fridge and your order may not be constant. Therefore the driver has to work on call. Considering the gas price, the price you offered is not attractive.

You got be kiding. Truck drivers earn more than $1000 a week...$100 for 10 hours, you dream

But we can hire someone with fairly big vehicle, e.g., van...and even without fridge, actually big cooler will do...

"Truck" I mean a big cargo van... I already see people on CFC is looking for work with this kind of van... $10/hr

How to compete with other ethnic stores? Price and quality. Can we guranttee these and maintain a good margin?

Another important issue is formality. We will have a business name and provide receipt to customers, right? I understand high profit is not risk-free money, but it would be a nightmare if anybody got into some sort of trouble because of having earned several pennies breaking the rule.

Above all, this is a self-help club... so, we are there to benefit from the power of the collective. (sound like initial CCP )

Legality is the key here. So to avoid the risk, we need to use the "KISS" process... that is "Keep It Simple". The trial can be like this:
(1) We hire a responsible guy from a registerred moving/transport company @ a competitive rate.
(2) Individual of us provide a cooler size bin and mark our name and order on it. Give this too the driver and tell him to pick up stuff and leave them the bin
(3) T&T will have order ready to be picked up
(4) Driver comes back and leave all the bins in a TBD location for pick up.
(5) Driver get paid and the pin gets picked up
(6) Me eating my favorite bum few hours later

NOTES:
(0) Reputable and responsible nature of the driver is the key here. But if there is profit, I am expecting this to be a repeat business.
(1) Now if $200 is not enough, then what is? Likely only a trial will tell. But I think there is a profit in $200
(2) We will not likely do it like every week. So once we have 10 order, we can arrange a trip (alot like some ad-hoc bus sight-seeing tour we have on CFC)
(3) After the initial trial is sucessful, this can easily become a profitable business for biz-mined ppl (e.g. why only limited to T&T?)
(4) Not too worry local store issue. I hope indiviual club memeber will be smart enough for odering the right thing to make the that transport fee worth every penny. I know I would.

right, why T&T? I have an idea for long but was lazy to realize it with actions. Your message woke me up from deep hibernation. Wow, that feels good, even if it's just a rush of excitement.
You like the bun sold in T&T, and in Ottawa there are some people (if not many) who can make that bun even tastier and cheaper than the one you used to get from some store. I bet grandma grandpa would feel better if they can make some money in a way that's much better than going to casino to get 20 bucks while staying there the whole day like old dummies. They are SO lonely and do not look like fit in a whole different culture d/t language barriers etc. Why can't we form a "legend" for them and they make buns/dumplings/this and that in a big room with Chinese news/shows/gossips going on and also get paid at the same time?---yeah, I know, that's another legal issue and a lot of them are just visitors. It's tricky.
I have many other ideas too but many of them were just flushed down to the toilet, with my laziness overpowering ambition and my hesitation thrawting the courage.
Come back to your original topic. The bin and pick up idea is good and easily profitable when it's MAINLY targeting the newly-arrived immigrants, international students who can't cook, can't drive.
Mike and his pal are good candidates for transportation. They helped me move before and seem to be nice people.
Sign me up for this tiny business. If the short-grain 8kg/bag rice in Toronto is priced below 5 bucks, I would sign up for the coming first transportation also and want three bags of rice.I guess i need to order something else to help cover the cost, maybe.
