I don't think this tree is able to pass the cold winter unless moving inside the house during winter.

我找树的时候，打听过香椿树。
问辽宁人，说他们不种香椿，要跑到山东去买。大概是那里种不好吧？
香椿在北京长得挺好。北京是北纬四十度，这里是四十五度。可要是论气温，三十年前北京的冬天，好像也不比去年渥太华的冬天暖多少。
香椿在北美难找，大概是因为这儿的人不认这种树。即便在在美国，想买一棵香椿树也挺难的。
到Wikipedia去查了一下toona，不那么乐观:
"...Toona sinensis is of interest as by far the most cold-tolerant species in the Meliaceae, native in China as far north as 40°N in the Beijing area, where its tender shoots, called xiangchun (Chinese: 香椿; pinyin: xiāngchūn), are a traditional local leaf vegetable. It is the only member of the family that can be cultivated successfully in northern Europe, where it is sometimes planted as an ornamental tree in parks and avenues. Until recently, it had no widespread English common name, though Chinese Mahogany (reflecting its botanical relationship) is now used (e.g. Rushforth 1999)."

I did some research on it too. It looks like Toona sinensis hardness is US zone 5 as canadian zone 4. Ottawa is at zone 4A or 4B. So it should be ok. But the one year old young tree can not pass -10C. So direct plant seed outdoor is out of question.
I don't know if there are young trees for sale in ottawa. I do find it is possible to get seeds online.
I think if your really want to try it. You may have to plant seed indoor, and use it as indoor plant for first year or two. Plant it out door when it is big enough.

各位，我在国内只看到和吃的是绿色的香椿，这红色的不知道哪位见识过呀？如果不耽误吃，我就买点红色的籽，如果不如绿色的好，我就等明年开春买一个绿色品种的苗。
