PARIS, Aug 1 (Reuters) - French telecoms equipment provider Alcatel (CGEP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) is in talks to acquire the high-speed mobile arm of Canadian rival Nortel Networks Corp. (NT.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) to boost market share, according to a telecoms newsletter and a Paris-based analyst.
The French company would only have a small window of opportunity before it completes its merger with U.S. competitor Lucent (LU.N: Quote, Profile, Research) by the end of the year, they said.
Any deal after the merger would be more complicated, they added.
"We are open to all options that would allow us to boost our presence in that technology," Alcatel told Reuters without confirming the talks.
A Nortel spokesman said the company doesn't comment on rumor and speculation.
Its shares gained 1 Canadian cent to C$2.22, on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday and were flat at $1.96 in New York.
"According to our industry contacts with Nortel France, the acquisition process is well under way," said Vincent Maulay, analyst at Oddo Securities in Paris.
"The French telecoms equipment provider, which can make acquisitions before its merger with Lucent, could soon announce the acquisition of radio Utran (the high-speed mobile business) of the North American group (Nortel)," said this week Euro-TMT, a telecoms newsletter, without citing sources.
French brokerage Oddo said on Tuesday the deal, which would be worth about 1.5 billion euros ($1.91 billion), makes sense as Alcatel and Lucent would have only 6 percent of the market for high-speed mobile equipment once they combined operations.
Nortel's market share is currently about 10 percent. Its top rivals Ericsson (ERICb.ST: Quote, Profile, Research) and Nokia Siemens (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) both have 30 percent.
However, Oddo also warned of execution risks as the acquisition would come on top of Alcatel's merger with Lucent.

"As we’ve outlined in previous articles, Nortel is in a downward spiral. As it closes down or sells off whole sectors of product lines, its turnover will decrease faster than it can grow the other lines. The opportunity to ‘cross sell’ diminishes as the number of sales people decreases and Nortel needs to exploit those opportunities fast ? the whole market is currently slowing down."
-Nortel goes into Spiral of Death
this is a desperate sale to a ruthless fox, alcatel, who has a long history of fleecing rivals assets.
nortel is selling herself at the bottom just as worldwide carriers are poised to adopt these technologies. i suspect alcatel has inside information on sprints mobile plans next week.

As Mobile Broadband Evolves, Sprint Stands Ready to Announce Key Decision
The mobile broadband market has evolved quickly over the last few months. But, as companies align based on their underlying technologies, it remains unclear which operator, service provider and/or equipment vendor are best positioned to take advantage of the migration to bridge the IP realm through next-generation network (NGN) deployments.
That’s because, whether an operator adopts WiMAX or uses UMTS/HSPA to upgrade its GSM network or EV-DO Rev A for its CDMA network, consumers are oblivious to the high stakes, multi-million dollar gambles that are taking place over their heads. From their vantage point, so long as access-agnostic technologies deliver upon the promise of a unified customer experience, the IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) architecture will go down the annals of history as a resounding success...
However, clear winners may become more apparent after Sprint Nextel announces which broadband platform the company has decided to deploy in its 2.5GHz mobile network. A decision could come as early as this week. John Polivka, Sprint spokesman, confirms the carrier is still expected to make its much-anticipated announcement this summer but added no decision has been made public yet.
According to Polivka, Sprint has conducted a number of technical trials in order to evaluate various broadband platforms. The company has tested a UMTS-based technology dubbed TD-CDMA, supplied by a tiny company that’s attracted a lot of attention known as IPWireless. Along the way, Sprint has invested a total of $14 million of financing into IPWireless...
