Councillors Question Mayor's Vision to Cut Jobs
Josh Pringle
Tuesday, August 14, 2007
Mayor Larry O'Brien admits it was a "slightly disappointing" day at Ottawa City Hall.
O'Brien is under-fire for suggesting the City of Ottawa could find 200 million dollars in savings and cut one-thousand jobs over the next three-years.
A report for Ottawa's long-range financial planning committee outlines 100 million dollars in savings and 500 jobs that could be cut without affecting services.
Councillor Rick Chiarelli told CFRA News there are still decision to be made about what services the City of Ottawa should be providing before predicting that outcome.
Chiarelli calls suggestions to cut 500 jobs today "ridiculous."
City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick admits some jobs will have to be cut if the City of Ottawa wants to find savings.
The process is now underway to identify areas where positions could be cut.
City Council will set out the priorities for the budget and make decisions on areas to cut spending by the end of the month.
