Massive Fire on Somerset
Josh Pringle
Thursday, August 16, 2007

An early-morning four-alarm blaze on Somerset is keeping Ottawa Fire Service crews busy.

An Ottawa Police officer spotted the fire in the 800 block of Somerset Street West at 3:30 am.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 5:30 am.

There is a combination of businesses on the ground floor and 18 apartment units upstairs in the buildings.

Acting platoon chief Dave Capstick says all residents of the building got out safely.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries.

Ottawa Police say Fire Service investigators and the Ottawa Police Arson Squad are on the scene. The investigation will begin once the fire is extinguished.

The intersection of Somerset Street and Booth is expected to remain closed most of the morning.

Half of one building had collapsed by 7:30 a.m. ET. 'The other half is a facade just hanging,' CBC's Rob Thomas reported from the scene.
