I recommend to learn 2 times of 2 hr lesson per week, and last for
3 to 6 months, depending on your progress. Look for institute or instructor who teach preventive driving skill, which most instructors don't.
Only talented people or those with experience can acquire safe driving skill in 1 month.
Certainly there are several expectation as well. Certain people just want to reach the minimum standard to pass the exam and pick up the rest themselves. Certain people just want to save money regardless of their skill. Only minority of people want to acquire safe driving skill and pass the exam.
Some people can reach the minimum standard, and learn the safe driving skill by themselves, but most people don't. I would like to highlight that safe driving is the key to protect the safety of the family in the car, as well as people walking on the road. My concept is avoid accident, instead of make minimum damage in the accident. In safe driving and in life, we alway say "a lot of mistake can be prevented." In preventive driving lesson, instructor teach you the skill or you become "prevent the mistake by acquiring the knowledge."
I am one of the driver who spend 5 hr in 1 month to reach the minimum standard to pass the exam. Then I pick up safe driving by myself. However, I ride bicycle, motorbike, racing bike, and car at the same time. So I know each type of riders, and drivers feel towards careless and skill-less drivers. Drivers who does not cycle, motorbike, and touch car before, please seriously consider spending more time to learn, or 6 - 12 months to learn.
You can consider buy your own car, while learning with an instructor. It will save you money to invite a careful driver as your adviser to point out your mistake.
E.g. buy a 10 yr old car for $2,000, insurance for $2,000, and spend 70% time driving yourself, and 30% with instructor. You save the money while gaining the skill.
I can give you comparison of safe driving with normal driving instruction given by instructor
Scenario 1: When green light change to read light, and it is your turn to move
Normal instructor's instruction:
1. Ensure in proper gear
2. Just press gas throttle and head forward
Safe driving instruction:
1. Ensure in proper gear
2. Look for pedestrian cross on both left and right
3. Look for car violating red light in all 3 direction
4. Look across the road for any pedestrian crossing the road
5. It is safe to press the gas throttle and move ahead
Scenario 2: Yield sign at a hidden turning junction, or thick snow blocking
Normal instructor's instruction:
1. Stop in front of yield sign board at the junction
2. If no car, turn into the junction
Safe driving instruction:
1. Stop in front of the white line near to the yield sign (not the sign board) at the junction
2. If you can't see the incoming car, move the car a little to the front slowly, until you can see incoming car
3. When it is clear, check for pedestrian crossing on both side
4. Double check for incoming car again, and slowly turn into the junction
5. If there is incoming car again, wait for it to clear
6. When it is clear, double check for pedestrian crossing on both side again
7. If there is pedestrian crossing, let them cross first
8. After that, look for incoming cars again
9. When it is clear, and no pedestrian crossing, only then turn into the junction
For new driver, I will expect they have no idea in the cost of accident.
Let me simply give 2 example base on rough estimation
Car accident 1: Careless or bad driving that cause minor damage to car, and no person injure
A minor scratch in 1 side of the car door cost $1,500. A cracked bumper cost $1,500. Broken windscreen $2,000. Front impact $13,000. Insurance premium increment about $500 for next 5 years for first accident, regardless of whose fault.
The more expansive is the car, the higher the cost. Ontario insurance does not care whose fault. Each party claim to their own insurance for damage repair, and bear the increase in insurance premium
Car accident 2: Serious damage to car, human injuries. Life threatening, or require longer than 10 years rehabilitation/impair, with attendant
Insurance company cover up to $100,000 and only 10 years. Party not at fault can sue you for suffering, loss of income, rehabilitation, additional income replacement, and any other area that insurance company not provided, or covering long enough. The lawsuit last 3 years or longer
You can refer to following Ontario insurer accident coverage to know what insurance company cover. There are a lot of lawyers waiting to sue the party at fault
