Canada recorded its strongest job gains in 15 years in 2002 in the
wake of consumer and government spending, a rise in exports, and a
booming housing market.
Job creation soared 3.7% last year, the strongest annual growth rate
since 1987. By the end of 2002, employment had jumped 560,000 from
where it began the year. In December, the proportion of the population that
was employed stood at 62.4%, the highest on record. In November,
Canada's employment rate was higher than the US rate for the first time
since 1988.
