Okay, let's put it this way.
1) I have US$10,000 in my savings account. (of course it is after tax.)
2) I change it into CDN$11,400 today.
Of course I don't have to pay any tax as there is no capital gain, but an exchange, I guess.
3) After 13 months, I change the CDN$11,400 into US$11,000
Do I have to pay tax on the US$1,000 gain?
4) After another year or two years, I changed the US$11,000 into CDN$13,000
Do I have to pay tax on the CDN$1,600 gain?
My calculation may not be correct though.
OR let's make up a story,
I had changed CDN$5,000 into US$6,000 for my trip outside of Canada. Ater I returned from the trip, I changed the left-over US$3,000 back to CDN$3,000. Did I have to pay any tax after all on the CDN$500?
